When most people hear the phrase XAI (Explainable Artificial Intelligence), they imagine computer scientists writing white papers or regulators debating accountability. But there’s another group at the center of AI adoption that rarely gets enough credit: designers.

Designers don’t create the mathematical guts of AI models. Instead, they shape the way humans encounter AI. And when AI feels like a black box, it’s designers who decide where to cut a window into that box—so that end-users can peek inside without being overwhelmed.

Why designers matter in XAI

A designer’s role is not just visual polish. It’s cognitive scaffolding: helping users navigate AI-driven decision-making without losing confidence, autonomy, or clarity.

  • Good design: Anticipates user questions—Why did the AI suggest this? Can I trust it? What are my options?

  • Poor design: Drowns users in numbers (confidence scores, p-values) or hides logic behind “because the system said so.”

Here, explainability becomes a UX (User Experience) problem. It’s less about exposing the raw model and more about translating machine logic into human reasoning.

Translation as design

Think of explainability as a translation exercise. AI thinks in terms of probability distributions; humans prefer narratives, stories, and metaphors. Designers act as translators. They convert:

  • Technical outputs → plain language (“The AI predicted pneumonia because of these three features: cough, fever, X-ray shadows.”)

  • Numerical scores → visual metaphors (confidence bars, color heatmaps).

  • Complex causality → interactive explanations (sliders that show how changing an input shifts the output).

Case study: Spotify’s “Wrapped”

Spotify’s “Wrapped” is not explainability in the traditional sense. But it shows how AI outputs can be made relatable. Rather than showing you the raw data of your listening, Spotify packages it into a story: “You listened to 3,000 minutes of jazz; your top artist was Coltrane.” This design turns raw algorithmic processing into a shareable human narrative.

What if credit-scoring apps, medical dashboards, or hiring platforms used the same logic—narratives instead of numbers?

Challenges for designers

  • Avoiding oversimplification: Too much smoothing hides important nuance.

  • Avoiding information overload: Too many layers of transparency cause fatigue.

  • Cultural sensitivity: What feels clear in one cultural context (e.g., red = warning) may not translate globally.

Designers sit at the front lines of XAI. They must decide not just what the AI explains but how humans will receive it. In doing so, they hold enormous power over whether AI feels like an alien machine—or a partner in problem-solving.
